Ten Questions and a Thank you for Sven Palmowski

If you haven't already noticed, although I believe some of you have, one of my most favorite designers, if not the most-favorite-designer, is Sven Palmowski (aka a.mar.illo). I'm pretty much sure that I own most of his shirts and I'm loving every damn one of them. Actually, I believe he is the only single designer of whom I own so many designs. And that's why I'm thrilled and incredibly honored to have the chance to interview this great illustrator, whose so unique style you can find in web's most eclectic stores.

1. Just for the sake of stereotypes, where do you find your inspiration?

In many things, in music, in cities, in medieval prints, in books...

2. What artists have influenced you?

The German artists of the twenties, George Grosz as an example , the Dada movement, also contemporary illustrators of course, Jeffrey Decoster, Camilla Engman...



3. How did t-shirt designing come up?

I made my first logo t-shirt design for a belly dance school in Barcelona in 2004. In June 2007 I won my first tee design contest, that was Dish Jeans in Vancouver, Canada. A few months later DBH started among others, since then I´m more of a t-shirt designer than an illustrator like I used to be.

4. What is your process when creating a t-shirt design?

Depends on if it´s a commission work, then I try to do what the client has in mind. If not, I just do what I have in mind myself and later submit it to a place I think it could fit to. Technically spoken: 1. a sketch, 2. a clean ink drawing, 3. a scan and 4. some Photoshop color work.



5. You currently sell your designs to numerous t-shirt companies around the world. Have you ever though of creating your own line, your own brand?

Yes I actually did, but until now I was afraid of the extra work, you know: dealing with printers, retailers, creating an online shop, shipping and all that... I like the idea though.

6. How would you describe your art?

Not everything I create I would consider art. The rest is sort of expressive-trippy-dada stuff.



7. You were born in Stuttgart, Germany but moved to Barcelona. What is in Barcelona? Was that a creativity related decision?

It´s definitely a great place for creativity, but I moved here because my dream was to live in a foreign country for a while and Barcelona was perfect for practical reasons too. That was 5 years ago, now I have family here and no plans to move again soon:)

8. What projects are you working on now?

I just did some tee designs and submitted them to A-Better-Tomorrow.com and BadAsHellClothing.com, other than that there is an illustration job for some educational books to do.



9. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Professionally? No clue! 2 years ago I had no idea I would design tees on an almost full time base, so I can imagine that are more changes to come.

10. Describe a perfect day.

Starting with good coffee, receiving some great news, eating some good food, traveling or just being at the beach on a lovely day with my family...
