I just read an interesting article at Custom T-Shirt Talk about Zazzle trying to recruit some of Cafepress' shopkeepers. Truth is that Zazzle has been changing a lot lately, improving the website and changing their commission policy. So I contacted some friends who happen to be CP shopkeepers and it looks like for couple of those this happens to be the case. According to some rumors, a big share of Zazzle has been bought by the Murdoch Corp and if that's truth it may justify the changes, the inflow of capital, and this "aggressive" tactic.
Now the question is, why someone would leave Cafepress to migrate to Zazzle? One reason I can think right away is the printing quality and the product variety that Zazzle offers. I recently bought a t-shirt from Zazzle and I have to admit their printing quality is amazing in comparison to anything I've ever bought from CP. Another reason could be the better service. In the past years I've been hearing a lot of complains from CP shopkeepers regarding the service they get at CP. I guess it's difficult to keep up with the millions of members that CP has and keep everyone happy. In addition, exactly because of the volume of CP shopkeepers it's hard for some very good designers to get the attention and the exposure they deserve, while in Zazzle, who has less members, that can be achieved more easily. And the fact that they've been contacting shopkeepers personally and trying to persuade them to migrate can be very flattering for these people who were totally ignored at CP. In any case, I see no reason why not having a second store over at Zazzle.
Now, one of the points the article makes is if this "is the best way to grow your business" by recruiting from other companies instead of trying to build up your own community of shopkeepers by offering the tools that would make it irresistible to sign in. In some extend I agree but on the other hand I know that a lot of CP shopkeepers are mainly stuck with CP because they have invested a lot of time and effort, not because CP is the best site to be. So if Zazzle offers them to promote their shop and take care of their account, this is tempting. It's obvious that this whole tactic is an attempt to cut into CP's lead in the industry and I have no idea what would the CP's response be. So let's enjoy the ride...
